The Renton Rangers entered the Peewee Division playoffs of the North Sound Junior Football League as the undisputed top seed with a perfect 7-0 record, and on Saturday afternoon, they played like a team determined to keep it that way. Facing off against the eighth-seeded Everett Timberwolves in the first round, Renton delivered a complete performance in all three phases of the gameโcruising to a 40-0 shutout victory that secured their place in the semifinal round.
The game opened with a statement. On just their second offensive play from scrimmage, Malakai Armstead took a handoff, found a seam on the right side, and sprinted 55 yards untouched to the end zone for the gameโs first touchdown. The explosive play immediately electrified the Renton sideline and set the tone for what would become a big day for the Rangers. The extra point by Messiah Reynolds was good, giving Renton an early 7-0 lead.
Everettโs offense struggled from the outset. A rush for no gain by Knox Montgomery followed by a sequence of negative-yardage plays quickly led to a punt. Renton took over again with favorable field position and wasted no time. After a short run from Dondre Dowlen, the dynamic running back struck gold on the next play, slicing through the middle of the Everett defense for a 54-yard touchdown. Reynolds was stopped on the extra point try, but Renton had already pushed their lead to 13-0.
Defensively, the Rangers were relentless. Linemen and linebackers regularly met Everett runners behind the line of scrimmage, as the Timberwolves found no room to operate. Tackles for loss piled up as Dondre Dowlen, Nasir Rogers, and Mason McClinton made their presence felt on nearly every series.
In the second quarter, Renton continued to pile on. Lonzell King broke loose down the sideline on a 55-yard touchdown run, his only carry of the half. The extra point was converted to make it 20-0. Minutes later, Everett coughed up the football after a tackle by King, and Armstead pounced on it to give Renton the ball back deep in enemy territory. Though the Timberwolves managed to hold off a touchdown on the ensuing drive, key rushes from Devaughn Burrell-Lofton and Camโron Thomas burned the clock and demonstrated the Rangersโ depth and versatility out of the backfield.
Renton took a 20-point lead into halftime and came out of the break with the same intensity. Early in the third quarter, a fumble by Myles McGregor was recovered by Gianni Pascua-Richard, setting up the Rangers in Everett territory yet again. Dowlen needed just one play to capitalize, bursting through for a 33-yard touchdown runโhis second of the day. Reynolds added the extra point to extend the lead to 27-0.
Everettโs next series produced more of the same: negative yardage, backfield pressure, and another fumble. McGregor once again lost the ball under pressure, and Renton quickly turned that mistake into points. Dowlen, nearly untouchable all day, broke off his third touchdown run, this time a 57-yarder, to put the game even further out of reach. By the end of the third quarter, the Rangers had built a commanding 34-0 lead.
The Timberwolvesโ offense, led by a combination of Montgomery, Bojang, and McGregor, continued to fight, but ultimately, they struggled to move the ball against Rentonโs front seven. Mason McClinton added two more tackles in the fourth quarter, including one for a loss, and later recovered another Everett fumble after a hit jarred the ball loose.
Rentonโs final touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter. After a short gain by King, Burrell-Lofton found daylight on the right side and raced 27 yards for the score. Though the extra point attempt was unsuccessful, the 40-0 lead was more than enough to seal the win and send the Rangers to the next round.
Statistically, the game belonged to Renton from start to finish. Dowlen was electric, racking up 149 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on just five carries, while also completing both of his passes for 38 yards. Burrell-Lofton added 61 yards and a touchdown, and King and Armstead each contributed long scoring runs. The Rangers’ offense scored six touchdowns on the ground, with an average scoring play of over 47 yards.
On defense, McClinton led with three tackles and a fumble recovery. Dowlen and King chipped in with key stops, and the Rangers forced four fumbles in totalโrecovering three of them. Everettโs leading rusher, Mac Gallagher, tried to keep his team in the game, but yards for Gallagher and his teammates were hard to come by.
After the game, Renton head coach Darryl Gant praised his teamโs focus. โOur guys were locked in from the first snap. Weโve worked all season to play with discipline and energy, and today it showed in every phase of the game. Iโm proud of how they came together and took care of business.โ
