The Seattle School District is requesting several modifications to existing zoning regulations as part of its redevelopment plans for the school. These proposed changesโknown as “departures” under Seattleโs zoning codeโinclude increased lot coverage, increased building height, reduced long-term bicycle parking, and the addition of an electronic reader board.
The request falls under the guidelines of the Seattle Municipal Code (SMC 23.51B and SMC 23.79), which outline the Public School Departures Process. At the meeting, district representatives will present the proposed changes to the Aki Kurose Middle School Development Standards Departure Advisory Committee, a panel that includes local residents along with representatives from the Seattle School District and the City.
Following the presentation, community members will have a chance to offer public comments. The committee will then deliberate and consider the Districtโs requests. Additional meetings may be scheduled if necessary.
Residents who are unable to attend can submit written comments by Tuesday, July 15. Comments should be directed to Dipti Garg at the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. They can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to P.O. Box 94649, Seattle, WA 98124-4649.
Those needing interpretation services for the meeting must request them by July 8 by calling Dipti Garg at 206-684-5613.
The meeting is part of the Cityโs Major Institutions and Schools Program, a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods initiative that facilitates community involvement in long-term development plans for local schools, hospitals, and universities. The goal is to ensure that the voices of neighbors are considered throughout the planning process.
