SAN DIEGO โ Midshipman 2nd Class Quang Le, a native of Seattle and student at the U.S. Naval Academy, recently completed hands-on training aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer as part of the Navyโs Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen program, known as CORTRAMID.
A 2023 graduate of Haas Hall Academy, Le is in his third year at the academy, majoring in data science and Chinese. He described his decision to attend the academy as a pursuit of academic excellence and unique experiences.
โI wanted the best education possible while also getting an atypical experience, and the academy provided that opportunity,โ said Le.
Located in Annapolis, Maryland, the Naval Academy prepares students to become officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Midshipmen attend the academy for four years, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and receiving commissions as Navy ensigns or Marine Corps second lieutenants. All graduates commit to at least five years of active-duty service.
CORTRAMID offers midshipmen a four-week immersion into the Navy and Marine Corpsโ key operational communities. Participants spend one week each exploring the surface, submarine, aviation and Marine Corps branches. The training allows midshipmen to experience life in the fleet and informs their service preferences before commissioning.
โHaving this opportunity has shown me the practical side of naval service, including the wide variety of jobs available to officers,โ said Le.
Aboard USS Boxer, a San Diego-based amphibious assault ship, Le witnessed firsthand the strategic role the vessel plays in naval operations. Designed to transport Marines, their equipment and aircraft, Boxer can support missions ranging from humanitarian assistance to full-scale amphibious assaults. The ship accommodates approximately 1,200 sailors and up to 1,800 Marines.
โServing in the Navy means I get the honor of working with other Americans of all backgrounds to do jobs you never expected,โ Le said.
Le credits his upbringing in Seattle with shaping his approach to service.
โI learned growing up that putting effort into everything you do is good for the soul,โ said Le.
He also expressed gratitude to his family.
โI would like to thank my parents, grandparents and sister for all their support,โ Le said.
Upon graduation, Le will join a Navy that operates worldwide, providing security, support and presence across the globe.
