Construction is set to begin in early January 2026 on a long-anticipated skatepark in Rainier Beach, a project driven by strong community support and collaboration. Seattle Parks and Recreation, CHAMPS Resource and Service Center, and Parents for Skateparks announced that TERRA DYNAMICS INC. will mobilize on site at Rainier Beach Playfield, 4707 S. Cloverdale Street, to start building the new Rainier Beach Skatepark.
The community-initiated skatepark will become an exciting addition to the Rainier Beach Community Center and the areaโs local sporting activities. Designed to fit naturally within the surrounding landscape, the skatepark will offer a mix of street and transition-style terrain that appeals to all age groups and ability levels. Beginners will find welcoming elements to build confidence, while more experienced users will be challenged by features that encourage progression and creativity.
โRainier Beach has been boldly advocating for a dedicated skate space for years,โ said a representative of Seattle Parks and Recreation. โThis new skatepark brings that long-held vision closer to reality. Itโs designed not only for skateboarding but also as a community gathering space where kids, families, and neighbors can connect and enjoy healthy outdoor activity.โ
Construction is scheduled to continue throughout 2026, with a ribbon-cutting celebration planned for fall when the project is expected to be completed. SPR expressed gratitude to the many skateboarding advocates whose input and tireless support helped shape the project. โSeattleโs skateparks are world class not by accident, but because of the passion and contributions of local advocates who show up and make their voices heard,โ said the announcement.
The total project budget is $4.5 million, a combination of public funding and private fundraising. Early support for the effort came from a Neighborhood Matching Fund award from the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Design and construction funding are provided by Seattle Parks and Recreation, with additional grants from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office and the King County Parks Levy.
โThank you to everyone who has participated to date to make this skatepark and community gathering space a reality,โ SPR added. โThis park reflects the creativity and energy of the Rainier Beach community and beyond, and will serve as a home for skateboarding and outdoor recreation for years to come.โ
